…Hot wonton dumplings

January 21, 2024

Dear Journal,

For no reason at all, I really like the word wonton. Maybe because it sounds like it might mean something inappropriate. Yeah, that’s the reason.

I woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing non-stop. I tried to ignore it, but the phone was lodged somewhere between my armpit and under my left rib… I think. It had to be either an emergency call from one of my friends or, it was from my mom.

A video call through messenger at 7:36 am. Yep, it was Mummy. “I just wanted to hear your voice…” Yeah sure mummy. She actually wanted to talk to me around her fellow shop owners to show off that her child was in America, nothing new. Until she said: “Yeah so I think I’m starting to like my new friend very much. I think he likes me too. What do you think I should do?” Confused and bothered, and confused, I told her I didn’t know and why was she asking me? But I quickly told her she was a big girl, and could do what she wanted. She started to reply but the network connection started to mess up, as usual. I’ve never been more thankful for it before.

I found out about ‘New friend’ two days ago, and he was just an acquaintance from the past that she bumped into again. Don’t get me wrong, I’m ecstatic that something is sparking for her again after Dad’s death, I just don’t completely know how to deal with it yet. (Hey, I rhymed!)

Anyway, I wanted to do something productive today, so I got out of bed after the call. Then I remembered: the museum trip with Pop-Pop and his family at 2 pm! So, I cleaned up, read one of my hoarded library books, got ready, and left with Pop-Pop, Nana, and Frankie. We met up with Alec, Nicole, and two of their kids. I’ll tell you about how I met these people and who they are one day.

The museum was incredible! First time being in one. I saw beautiful artworks, stared at a gorgeous security guard for too long, took photos, and SAW REAL LIFE MUMMIES!! Taking the elevator was awesome too! The interior was spacious, polished dark brown, with warm lights. It simply looked exotic.

We went to an Asian restaurant for dinner 2 hours later and it was a memorable experience. Our server was GORGEOUS, smart, and very enthralling. Everyone loved them, me included. Unfortunately, I don’t think Americans think non-Americans are a catch at first encounter. I might be wrong, but this server wasn’t having any kind of future with me. Broke my heart for sure but I’m growing an elastic one already lol. Overall, tonight was one of my favorite experiences in America. But I burnt the insides of my mouth with hot wonton dumplings.

Back home, all my roommates came back because school starts Tuesday. I have mixed feelings about how I feel having all three of them around again. I miss the quiet but I also miss school. Ha. Hated school all my life, only to love it as a college kid in America. Changed my major too but that’s a story for next time. It’s 4 am already, and I’m nodding of…
